ViestiAihe: Stefan's VW Golf GTI 20 Years   Ma 19 Heinä 2010 - 3:50

Moi!
Nimeni on Stefan, minä olen saksalainen ja asun alueella Köln/Bonnissa.

...okay and except swearing that's as much as I can say in finnish atm.
I've been looking through some topics here since I stumbled over this forum some time ago.
A very good and close friend of mine is finnish, as well as some other friends of mine... so hey, when Dr.AK told me that you finally created an international section, so I decided to register and post my car here.
I even plan to learn finnish soon so it even will help to stick around here and look (and read) through the topics Smile

In August I'll do a cartrip to Finland to visit friends, so you maybe can catch me driving through Turku or Tampere.
It even would be cool to know if you had some VW meeting going on while I'm in the country (20.08-29.08), wouldn't mind to drop by and take a look at some cars Very Happy

But enough about myself, time to introduce my car.
It's been through tough times until now and I stuffed a lot of money into it to get it into it's current shape... but let's start from the beginning.
I already own a 1986 VW Scirocco GTX 16 (fully equpied) which I am currently building up, so I needed a daly driver, as I always loved GTIs, I decided to buy a MKIII GTI 20 Years, as it just had that bit more spicey flavour than a normal MKIII GTI.

I drove a long way down to Bavaria to find a pretty stock, red GTI 20 Years with a Sunroof and I fell in love with this car the first moment I saw it.
Back then I didn't knew that a lot of work was waiting for me.
I took this pic the evening I bought the GTI. It was almost stock, except for a 60/40 lowered Vogtland suspension. It already had done over 224591Km when I bought it in February 2009.

Just a few weeks later I darkened the headlights and painted the VW emblem black.

Some time later, after my first visit to M.I.V.W., I changed the headlights to Hella De ones

It's been through some tough and rough times...

But I always started working on it again... the scrapyard never has been an option for me, so in the end it looked good again, the front just needs to get varnished as the current paintjob was done by myself at -2°C - 5°C Very Happy

I finally got back to finish my new summer rims. It's a set of BBS 722 16x7", so the stock rims of the GTI 20 Years, I just bought a second set to repaint it...

Now that I got the body into a good shape again, I wanted to make it look even better...
Some months ago I started collecting parts... first I got a good set of GTI Recaro seats...

...and other shit kept piling up in my hallway.

In the last two weeks I began changing parts, first I changed almost everything of the cooling system, then I changed the brakes and the suspension to finally throw my new painted rims at it... and it's done...

I now roll on:
Suspension

  • Vogtland Coilovers
  • All new and harder rubber bearings
  • Lemförder Ball joints
  • QH Track rod ends
  • -2,30° camber at the front and rear axle

Brakes
  • ATE Powerdiscs 288mm FA
  • EBC Redstuff brakepads FA/RA
  • Goodridge Steel Brakehoses
  • ATE Brakepipes

Wheels

  • BBS RS722 16x7" 2 piece rims, repainted (Stock Golf GTI 20 Years rims)
  • Hankook Ventus Evo S1 195/40R16
  • 25mm wheelspacers per wheel, RA
  • 15mm wheelspacers per wheel, FA

Exhaust

  • Stock GTI 20 Years end silencer
  • Golf GT mid silencer

Engine

  • Stock 2.0 8V 116PS (AGG)
  • New Cooler
  • New Waterpump
  • Beru Titan spark plugs
  • Liqui Moly 10W40

I already changed and added a lot of parts before, like the 200CPI Magnaflow metal cat, sensors, body parts (obviously Very Happy ) and a lot more....
...and I don't regret a bit of it...
On Saturday the GTI passed 280000Km, so I've driven it for over 55000Km now, with over 30 laps on the Northloop, and it never let me down, no matter at which temperatures or weather...

I'm very sure it'll do the 1700Km to Finland just fine.
Now I just want to get the front professionally repainted and add some thicker wheelspacers at the front, since I gained a lot more space with the -2,3° of camber.

Thanks to Dr.AK here are some recent pics from yesterdays M.I.V.W. meeting in Leiden, Holland

Unfortunately my front lip didn't survive the speedbumps... and it was my last one.... but hey, I still got a lot of red cable ties Very Happy

2nd gti edition on this forum Very Happy (user "Laatueine" has one as well)

yours is nice one... i think it should be a little lower.
i didn't expect to see that much rust in a car bought from bavaria. thought the rusting mk3s was caused by the excessive use of the road salt in finland, but i think its caused by some sloppy dude in wolfsburg...

Nice to see you here, Stephan Smile

You know what I think about your ride, I like it but it needs more low and wider wheels Laughing But it's one of the cars where I actually like the black / red wheels. Cool

And install an a/c for f*cks sake so we don't have to always roll with the windows down, man. My right arm's burned to hell from yesterdays trip, haha Laughing

Mk3s are notorious for their rust problems all over the world. Wink Some of the worst metal VW has ever produced, sadly.

Rust?? what is it?
Yeah, was through rusted

I can prove that too, both rocker panels (?), both rear inside fenders and much more. Many meters welded new parts to bottom. My english writing sucks little bit but maybe u guys understand something of it. Smile

And must say something about this car, very nice, maybe stance can be lover but overall its pretty clean.

@ TomVi
I already got some spacers, 25mm at the back and 15mm at the front, I want to change it a little, but I'm not sure yet if I'll just change the front ones to 20mm or if I would replace the rear ones with 30mm ones. Would use the 25mm ones at the front then... might already look shitty when there's sooo much space between the brakes and the center star of the rim Wink
And I'll have to talk to the TÜV if they would approve it so that it's even legal Very Happy

@ ee-2
Well... it's not a GTI Edition... it's a 20th anniversary model, I just changed the Seats to GTI Edition Recaros as they are much better in fast corners and more komfortable than my run down old seats Wink
I would sure like to lower it even more, the rear supsension's already adjusted to the lowest legal setting now, if I would go lower the springs already would jump out of their seats... at the front I could go 2-2,5cm lower though.
But then again, I still want to drive at the Northloop and don't always want to adjust it higher before I go there Wink

The use of salt is pretty usual in Bavaria too, pretty cold there in winter (for Germany at least Wink ) and they get a lot of snow... my 86 Scirocco GTX 16V is from bavaria too and as well had a lot of rusty parts and spots.
My Golf though doesn't rust anywhere except for that wheel arch and the rocker panel though.
The previous owner simply cut the edge of the wheelarches off and smeared Sikaflex on the edges to seal it... he didn't seal it from the inside though so when the plug at the upper part of the wheelhousing got lost at some point the cavities got flooded with water (in winter salty water Wink ) which obviously wasn't so good at all...

@ DrAK
AC is for pussies Very Happy

@ Joppe
Oh yeah... I could gain much experience on my Scirocco:

Just one of the many spots it had some rust Very Happy
I didn't expect the Golf to be that bad though scratch

Took a closer look at the Wheelarches today to see what bigger spacers I could fit... and just discovered that while there's ~1cm of space at the left side, there's ~2cm of space at the right side, that's why the rear wheel looks so lost in the wheelhouse on DrAK's pics Shocked
But well, guess I'll fit 30mm spacers at the RA and put the 25mm ones at the FA Smile

Today I just repaired the broken lip

Welcome,

Sweet Mk3! I would like to know more of that GTX Scirocco of yours? I'm all for the Scirocco's, many people say that they are dummiest looking cars on planet but i like them.. a lot. I've been dreaming about 16V GTX Scirocco since I bought my GTII seven years ago. The original GTX Roccos are rare, I know only one original 16V GTX in Finland that my friend owns. Few mk2 Rocco's that i have spotted in here are rare sight on daily traffic.

Time to time I have searched mobile.de and autoscout24.de for German GTX Scirocco's, few original GTX's that I have found were quite pricy and the rest were peace of tuning crap. I just have to wait for the right one and get flight to Germany someday.

Those pics are from when I bought it three years or so ago, I just changed the trunkdoor as the old one was heavyly rusted, like the doors and hood too.

1986 VW Scirocco GTX 16V
  • 139PS 1.8 16V (KR, so no cat)
  • Varnished spoilers
  • Sunroof
  • Electric Windows
  • Electric and heated mirrors
  • Electric original Recaro seats
  • Airconditioning

Mods:

  • Koni 40/40 suspension (adjustable hardness)
  • BBS RM 15x6,5J wheels with 195/50 tires
  • Wichers Strut brace
  • Hartmann exhaust
  • Momo Steeringwheel

The body was heavyly rusted too, but I fixed 90% of all the rusty spots now. Atm it's totally taken apart as I want to get it repainted. Except for the rather clean engine bay I won't mod the body... it'll be all OEM+ like my Golf.
There are just around 100 16V Sciroccos with that engine left in Germany and it'll be hard to find another that fully equipped one... so I just want to give it a nice finish and some good stance Smile

Oh... and if you need some help when you found a good GTX, let me know, maybe I can help Smile

He doesn't own the rims that long, so he had no time to buy spacers yet, plus the 185/35R17 tires are pretty sucky, so that he'll change to a different size too.. the train-look will be gone soon enough Smile

I bought a Golf III GTI 16V Edition Colour Concept... and at the same day where my brother and I picked it up, we modified it a little Laughing

Oh yeah... I just need the engine, gearbox and such for my GTI... the car got ruined by the previous owner who added a lot of cheap tuning before he widened the wheel arches (he turned the sleek metal into the fucking Alps!) and primered the whole body (without sanding the varnish underneath, lol) so yeah... I got all the stuff now to turn my GTI into a 16V next year Smile

Don't forget... the gray 16V Edition Colour Concept gets scrapped Wink
That car's already empty from the inside and will be completely taken apart when I fixed the electronic problems on the engine.
The engine will get all new set of gaskets and such before I'll put it into my GTI next year.

So back to my real GTI.... was bored yesterday so I went out to take some pics

Still need to lower it a bit more at the front, but meh... was to occupied with they gray POS 16V and being lazy Rolling Eyes

You won't belive how pokemon the gray one actually was... Laughing
The previous owner drilled a big hole into the rear, left trim for a yellow pushbutton that was meant to open the trunk. I mean... who is so dumb that he drills a hole into the trim of a black leather Recaro Colour Concept interior? That shit is so rare... but yeah, he just ignored that and put a yellow button there Suspect
You should've seen the guy I bought it from, it would've explained everything...

Bad for the kinda rare Golf, but good for me as I got that piece of shit pretty cheap. The engine is still in a good condition, so it really was a good buy. Smile

@ mosse
You mean the bad varnish on my red Golf's fender? It's a longer story that involves truck tire parts on the Autobahn and a quick, dirty paintjob in winter to get more money from that truck's insurance Wink
The whole front will get repainted some time, already bought a new frontbumper and found an original VW GTI/VR6 frontlip to replace the stitched aftermarket one.

Sure won't throw any wheels at the grey one, the body won't need nice rims once it's crushed into a flat sheet of metal in a week or two...

But I agree a little on the BBS RS 772s.
7J just isn't wide enough and it sucks that I have to use such thick spacers, so I plan to buy the same rims as 6.5J ones and give them to a company that adds 1.5" of drop center to it.
16x8J should look much better and it still should keep the OEM touch.

Yesterday I was at the Northloop, testing the setup on the track...

Though the car is pretty low and doesn't have much pitch travel left, it handles quite awesome on the track.
The Hankook tires stick nicely to the ground with the -2,3° of camber, so yeah... I had a lot of fun chasing some porsches where the driver didn't push it too hard ;D

Need to get some cooling for the brakes though. The Redstuff Breakpads produce quite some heat which the ATE Powerdiscs can't take that well.
But I already got plans to solve this problem... even ordered some Parts yesterday.

There are even some pics of me from yesterday Very Happy

Helmet? Unnecessary wieght Laughing

Okay... so short after day at the Northloop my left, rear wheel bearing started to make bad noises... so I yesterday changed the wheelbearings to swedish high quality ones Wink

And as I wanted to do some more stuff, I turned the coilovers down to the max... there's now no thread left... still it doesn't rubb anywhere... so I could slap myself that I got it legalized 2cm higher some days before Suspect

Well... but soon I need to go to the TÜV again to get the 16V swap legalized when it's done, they then can approve the lowered coilovers too Wink

But well... so I did some Liquid Glass action today and just when I was done it started raining.... Evil or Very Mad Suspect

So I at least took some pics...
